03/05/2018 – Another Check In with Quint

The update on Quint is he’s doing better. Not one hundred percent better, but better than before we took him in to the emergency vet a week ago.

After chowing down on a full can of wet food at the emergency vet, then scarfing another half can back at home, Quint has decided wet food is for sick cats and he’s not sick. He wants kibble, something we’re trying to get him off of. He’s still getting wet, canned food twice a day every day in his own SureFlap microchip feeder but he’s mostly ignoring it. We did catch him this morning horning in on Tessa eating from another feeder that’s kibble only.

We’ve also discovered he will lick his wet food if it’s sprinkled with FortiFlora, something we definitely don’t want to get him addicted to but he does need to eat something. Wellness does make kibble and we’re giving a few bits of that as treats. It’s a carefully monitored battle of wills right now.

And his pooping could, most certainly, be better. He’s on Miralax and Lactulose, both designed to help with constipation. So, where’s the poop? It’s a mystery, one we hope our regular vet will solve sometime today because Quint’s not telling.

Over the weekend, Quint started eating his wet, canned food like a good boy. Saturday, Dad saw Quint poop in a litter box. Ditto everything on Sunday. While we’re not yet claiming victory, Mom’s feeling pretty full of herself for having the stronger will and loads of patience and persistence.

02/28/2018 – Checking in with Quint

Today’s entry was originally meant to go over the finer details of our feeding/cleaning routine post from Monday. Something, or we should say, someone else very important came up that we wanted to share.

A couple weeks ago, we might have mentioned Quint was having constipation problems. He went three and a half days without producing anything from back there with the exception of gas, which scared the poor boy right out of the litter box each and every time that happened. He’s very shy about those kinds of things, a true gentleman who’d never release gas so loudly in public or private perhaps for fear of being labeled a gasbag.

Everything seemed to work out on the fourth day and all was well… until this past weekend when constipation returned with a vengeance. Throughout all this, he had no vomiting, was drinking water and eating just fine. Just, nothing was coming out like it should. Stuff was backing up and that was scary.

Quint was scheduled for a vet visit late Tuesday, the soonest he could get in, but he seemed so uncomfortable by Monday afternoon, even after giving him a bit of canned pumpkin Sunday evening and more Monday morning, we knew he couldn’t, nor shouldn’t have to wait for real relief.

Monday, we rushed him to our local emergency vet who looked him over and took X-rays and blood and proclaimed that yes, sometimes we know what we think we know: Quint was very, very constipated. No obstruction, no foreign objects, no visible tumors or abnormalities seen. Just lots and lots and lots of compacted poop.

Quint had to spend overnight at the emergency hospital. He was given fluids (always a good thing), and a couple of enemas (good if you really, really need them), and the poop wait was on. Would he? Could he? Will he? Won’t he?

By Tuesday morning, he presented the vets with the least amount possible and that just would not do. After calling to check up on him, the vets said if he didn’t poop soon, he’d likely have to spend another night there. But they had a plan and so, it was rinse and repeat time. More fluids, a couple more enemas, a bit of medication to soften things, and more waiting.

A bit of good news, in the meantime, is his blood work shows no sign of early kidney disease or other problems. The even better news is that Quint started eating wet, canned food on his own for the first time ever! He’s always hated that stuff!

By Tuesday afternoon, a couple more compacted poops appeared, and thankfully this time, they were bigger. Sorry, no photos but we are happy to say the emergency vets felt that it was enough to send him home; he wouldn’t have to spend another night there, and under the closest watch, of course, with lots of different medications to help him feel better and to help… um, help his colon feel better, too. He still has a lot in him but two of those prescribed liquid medications should help with that.

Late last night, we brought Quint home. And he chowed down an entire can of Wellness minced turkey. A while later, at medication time, he had a mild, somewhat scary reaction to his meds, and salivated most of those up. We called the emergency vets back and they said that was pretty much normal. We’ll administer his biggest dosage of meds, Cisapride, much more slowly and spaced out next time to help prevent that. It can’t do any good if it ain’t in him.

And that’s where we sit today. He’s comfortably ensconced in the quiet Cat Den by himself, tucked under his favorite fleece blanket. We’re waiting for more poop and anxious about getting his meds IN him, rather than on him and the floor. Let’s hope this big poopy adventure is at it’s end. Whew!

(Quint will be taking Gabapentin (1/2 capsule) twice a day for a week, Lactulose 3.0 mls three times a day for a week (perhaps longer), and Cisapride 0.25 mls twice a day and 1/4 tsp Miralax three times a day, both perhaps for life depending on his recovery.)

02/26/2018 – It’s Routine

Many times over the years we’ve been asked how we can possibly live with so many cats.

“Lemme guess. You have OCD and you vacuum every single day, right?” and “Gee, by now, cat fur must be part of your DNA!” and “The amount of fur alone must be maddening, or mat-tening. Get it? Har-Har. *elbow poke to the ribs*”

Oh, yes. We’ve just been ignoring all the fur all these years and here we find ourselves at admission time. As of November 19th of last year, the accumulated fur level finally reached our earlobes. Mom’s earlobes, specifically, which brings it just below Dad’s collarbone. Mom says it’s soft and oh, so fluffy, but everyone looks at her funny when she leaves the house dressed as a puff ball. Har-Har.

Actually…. you’d be hard-pressed to find much fur lying around our place and no, we aren’t OCD because if we were, we’d rearrange the letters, OCD, to be in the correct alphabetical order: CDO. So there!

We were asked recently if we have a routine. Maybe you have one or maybe not. Maybe you’re looking for one. We have a routine and it’s surprisingly easy for us to keep everyone happy and everything clean, maybe because we’ve been doing it for so long? Or maybe because we can adapt quickly to changing behaviors and personality types? Maybe we don’t want any more demerits from Patrol Sergeant Sunny? Who knows?

Let’s start with a full disclosure – We have six SureFlap microchip-activated feeders, laminate floors throughout, a central vacuum, and a Bissell steam mop. And persistence. The cats wouldn’t let us get away with not having persistence.

Our Routine: The Short Version

Feeding – Twice a day

* Miss Newton, Sunny, and Ruby – Wet food breakfast at 5 a.m. or earlier, dinner at 6 p.m.
* Tessa and Viola – Wet food leftovers from breakfast/dinner night before. Pia, Quint, and Olivia refuse wet food. For now.
* Tessa, Pia, Quint, Olivia, and Viola – Kibble bowls refilled and checked twice daily.
* Sunny, Pia, Tessa, and Viola get breakfast-only “snack” (about six pieces of “special” kibble each). It’s a silly routine thing.
* Water bowl/fountains wash/refills – Every day

Cleaning – Every day

* Litter boxes emptied twice daily, faithfully. Scrubbed and cleaned once weekly unless more is warranted.
* SureFlap feeder mats cleaned daily, feeders deep cleaned once weekly unless more is warranted.
* Laundry on demand. Some days are barfy days, some days aren’t. All cat blankets/coverings/towels washed every Sunday. Sometimes, toys, too!
* Vacuuming every Wednesday and Sunday. Laminate floors really do keep things cleaner and easier to keep that way.
* Steam mopped floors every Sunday.
* Hand scrubbing/wiping/disinfecting every Sunday or more if warranted.

And, that’s it. Okay, we’re leaving out the finer details: Morning attention time, “helping” Mom comment on blogs, first nap, second nap, morning brushies with Olivia, watching the noon news together, early afternoon nap, grooming attention, “helping” Mom create blog posts including photography sessions, play and chase hour, barf time (or if no barfs make an appearance, rip up something or get into trouble somehow), mid afternoon nap, sun bathing (if applicable) and more grooming, Miss Newton’s “singing” hour until Dad arrives home, dinner, play/Dad attention time, another hour of Miss Newton “singing,” and lastly, bedtime.

Obviously, Sunny doesn’t care about the details. Just give her the sunny, freshly repainted room and she’s happy. We’ll run through some of the finer details of our routine on Wednesday. Riveting stuff, huh?
