Hello Tessa! Tessa will be turning 14 years old sometime next month and we’re seeing the signs of aging in her. She thinner than the chunky tuxie she used to be some 6 or 7 years ago. She isn’t as fond of jumping up on the forbidden buffet (boo-fay) as she used to be but still occupies the kitchen counter top if she gets a whiff of ground turkey or cheese. She’s our official taste tester and in case either turkey or cheese isn’t up to her standards, she WILL let you know about it.

Later this month or early next month, she’ll go in for a new vet checkup and shot updates. Vet visits with Tessa run either hot or cold. She can be a lovey, snuggly sweetheart. Or, she can force vet assistants to break out the Kevlar gloves and full body armor. We never know which Tessa she plans to be that day. Mom has learned that vets don’t really like it when she steps in, takes charge by grabbing Tessa by the scruff and delivering a stern talking to. Or pressing her thumb onto her forehead. Tessa really doesn’t like that but it does get Mom’s point across, that being, “Tessa, I’m bigger than you. Stop being a jerk. Right now.”

14 years ago, we’d planned to add a black and white tuxie boy to our family but at the time, our area was sorely lacking in those and we gave up. Not more than a month later, Tessa came into our lives, almost as if she knew we needed a gray and white girl tuxie and that she’d be THE One.

Yep, she’s been the one all righty!

2/9/2026 – MultiCat Monday

A few weeks ago, someone called me a bad cat Mom; it might have been Tessa, because I had just one heated cat bed on the window ledge. The other heated bed, plugged in and toasty, was in a cubbie on the shredded tower of love and that bed was rarely used. We only have 1 electrical outlet nearby. I thought that arrangement worked. If you haven’t noticed, everyone’s thought process is wrong.

So, after I moved things around and set up 2 heated cat beds on the window ledge, all was good. Quint was happy and most importantly, Tessa seemed happy.

Not more than 45 minutes later, they proved me wrong. Somedays, with Tessa cats, you just can’t win.

Wisely not wanting to be involved in any of this nonsense, Viola chooses to nap in a ball on Dad’s bed with her favorite toy nearby. And since she isn’t comfortable with anyone else’s business today, Tessa felt she needed to supervise that nap.

2/6/2026 – Around Colehaus

Not much is growing or blooming outside here at Colehaus but this past fall’s batch of discount Paperwhite bulbs flowered much better than we expected. Sometimes, discounted grocery store bulbs forgotten in some dark corner box are worth every penny. Mom says she thinks she paid $5.99 for 8 of these. Every bulb bloomed. That hardly ever happens.

We’ve had several deep freezes here so far but no snow (thankfully, Mom says). Unfortunately, we’re sorely lacking rain and snow in the mountains. Our area has less than fifty percent of the snow pack we need for this coming summer water use. Skiers on Mount Hood are skiing on and around rocks. Our development and surrounding neighborhoods are on well water and aren’t terribly affected by snow pack, good or bad. But we are conscious of our water use. It might be a bad year for water for everyone.

With that in mind, let’s enjoy some mossy photos. We might want to revisit these and reminisce in late August.

Daffodils are coming up! Most people don’t get too excited about daffodils but, as you might expect, Mom does. We used to have dozens of different daffodils around here but moles, voles, raccoons, age and an unchecked sprinkler repair guy put an end to 99% of those. Mom used to swear she’d replace them all some day. Then she thought maybe the daffodils were the reason for the mole problem. Or maybe the sprinkler repair guy problem. Who knows? Nothing’s been replaced. That’s all we can tell you.

The blueberries are starting to put out buds. Mom needs to get out there and trim off old wood growth this month if we’re to have a good blueberry crop this year. Did you know blueberry bushes can live 50 years or more? Growing blueberries is a lifelong commitment. It’ll be interesting to see if the one blueberry bush that was moved and mangled so much during our arbor build last spring will come back. We think it will.

Nearby, the holly bushes seem very happy, as are the fox sparrows living within them. Sorry, no fox sparrows in the hollies photos. They’re shy.

We’re very happy to see our years of feeding birds seems to have rubbed off on a few neighbors. Here’s a neighbor’s suet feeder with a visiting scrub jay. On the other side of us, the neighbor has mounted an open seed tray on his new deck that attracts our local ringneck doves. Dad still enjoys watching wildlife flying around our yard and Mom enjoys thinking about the bird food costs being spread around instead of coming out of only our own pockets.
