Hello August. It looks like summer is a bit more than halfway over and long-time Colehaus Cats readers may wonder if we’ll get through the season without anything major breaking, as is usually the case.
: : snort! : : As if! So far, everything that broke over the last 2 weeks has been manageable and we thank Mom for squirreling away her dimes and pennies just in case. More on that later.
Meanwhile, every morning, before heading off to work just as the sun is thinking of pinking up the eastern sky, Mom peeks out the side garage door to see if anyone’s visiting. Too many mornings, the view was like this. And sad face Mom trudges to work.

One morning, someone was peeking through the fence! That was a good morning.

A few days later, a big raccoon visited. She was a polite eater and left almost everything in the bowl just in case someone was waiting in line behind her. No one was, but just look at her dainty little paws nibbling on a kibble! Clearly, this is not a sloppy eater. We wouldn’t have been surprised if she’d had a bib and napkin close at hand.

Finally the day arrived with the sound of a raccoon kit talking to its mama.

Mom nearly squealed with excitement. Instead, she whispered, “Hey there, little one. Welcome to the neighborhood!” And the little raccoon kit might have replied, “How rude! Can’t you see we’re eating here?”

And wisely, Mom took her instinct to squeal back inside when a few days later, this happened. Not in the picture is the littlest raccoon kit who took off like a shot down the steps and, no doubt, back to their den to hide. Good little raccoon. Don’t trust humans and you’ll grow to be a big wild raccoon someday.

Later, just last week in fact, on Mom’s special day off, she saw a neighbor’s cat in the fountain, not drinking but watching Mom instead, maybe even trying to get her attention because the fountain was so full of water, it had started to overflow. Something is clogged, probably the fountain pump filter material buried 4 feet under gravel. She called the fountain cleaning people who will come out tomorrow to access the problem and hopefully, not flood any neighbors’ yards in the process while emptying our wallets. Thank you, neighbor cat. You don’t happen to have a few hundred on you, do you?

And then Mom went upstairs and put on the birthday tiara because it was time for that, and because, sometimes, tiaras make everything better, even if just for a minute.
