We’re a family of writers and all writers we know have pets. Many have cats. Many cats have writer as pets. That’s another story for another time.

Living with us just over a month, Newton seems to have taken to the whole writing thing like a bee to honey. She does all the right things: Scowls at typos, bats at bad manuscripts, paws at fingers typing too long at a keyboard, and lounges all over the piles of research. Yep, she’s gonna fit in just fine.

The New King and Subjects: Faring Well.

Cameron adopts a shoe

Thank you for your kind emails after our loss of Zooot. Every one was appreciated and helped tremendously. Some asked how Cameron was doing now that Zooot had passed. The answer: He’s doing better than we feared he would (this had been a conversational topic for some time) and he has, in fact, adopted a ratty old shoe.

Perhaps adoption is too strong a word. Yes, he loves this shoe. We’d like to say he carries it around wherever he goes, eats with it and sleeps with it. But that’d be a fib. He doesn’t do any of those things. But while all the Colehaus Cats have a thing for this shoe, his bond is stronger, somehow, matching his disposition, that without his companion Zooot, is getting stronger every day.

Loss and the New King.

After a brief illness, Her Most Gracious Royal Majesty, Queen Zooot, a.k.a. Zoom, Pavarotti Pigpen, P-Cubed, and Little Orange Girl, lost her battle with kidney disease today, April 26th, 2012, on her sixteenth birthday. Her reign as Queen of the household was short, January 2011 to April 2012. She was happiest as a Lady in Waiting for just shy of fifteen years, rather than in the role of The Queen. She adopted feral boy Cameron as a kitten and guided him into becoming the best indoor cat he could be. It is he who now steps into her role.

We here at Colehaus won’t soon forget you, Little Orange Girl. You taught us responsibility, routine, and persistence and the Orange Girl ways. Above all, you gave us love. We love you.

Sweet Zooot, go in peace and find the others who have gone before. They are waiting and overjoyed to see you so soon. Until we meet again.

The Queen is dead. Long live The King.

Cameron, well trained as the future leader of Colehaus thanks to Zooot, assumes his role of King.
