09/18/2015 – Around Colehaus

This is the last weekend of summer here at Colehaus. The last of the flowers are blooming, the nights are cooling down, and Mom is frantically trying to wrap up her garden projects. Good thing she has so many snoopervisors in the garden to help!

Neighbor cat Whittles regularly visits his personal water fountain in our backyard, which is perfectly fine with us as long as he does not hunt in our backyard. Got it, Whittles? Leave the wildlife alone. Comprende?

We apologize for the glare and bad camera angle here. Handsome/beautiful Cocoa just doesn’t like pictures taken. We still don’t know Cocoa’s gender, but Mom got within two feet last week and got her fingers sniffed and she’s pretty sure Cocoa is staying over in Geoffrey’s House most nights.

That Mom and her birds! She’s not a big bird fan but some of them seem to like her (not just to poop on either) and she’s okay with that. Here’s Tessa’s favorite bird to watch from the kitchen window. It’s a blue Stellar Jay. It wasn’t hurt or anything but just hanging out, watching, maybe even supervising while Mom was hacking away at some roots or something. Maybe he was hoping for worms.

Out of frustration or maybe it was the heat that day, finally, Mom gave up on digging out that wad of old maple roots and left a big messy hole. Nope, that blue jay wasn’t being all judgmental or anything. *whispers* Yes he was.

There isn’t much that’s more satisfying than a pretty garden and a friendly garden cat, according to our Mom, who loves visits from neighbor cat Momo who just happens to be a top branch inspector. “There are no leaves on this branch,” he proclaims. “And no birds either. What’s up with that?” No birds for you either, Momo. You know the rules around here.

The last of the summer flowers (dwarf Crepe Myrtle), which usually are our fall flowers in a normal year. Everything bloomed a month early this year so all are pretty close to done already.

Neighbor cat Mustacheo likes visiting once a day, especially when the pretty blue food bowl is out.

Lily finally brought her babies to visit! Lily is the third generation raccoon to live under our backyard neighbor’s deck. She is the daughter of Happy (2014), sister to Trouble, and the granddaughter of Sunny (2013) who was the first raccoon to visit us regularly. Not photographed is Bob, a bobtailed raccoon boy who has been visiting us on and off since 2013 and is probably somehow related. Don’t know how they all survived the horrible neighborhood raccoon “relocation” of 2014 but we are happy this small group seems to be doing well, staying quiet and away from those evil raccoon haters. Shhh, let’s keep this sighting to ourselves.

Hold the presses! We might have a major story brewing here!

This just in…. a unique creature visited Colehaus last week… a squirrel but not just any squirrel. This squirrel is special because this is….

Or not. Looks like he has a torn ear that healed making an extra flap. Darn. And we were hoping for some of those fabled glitter unicorn farts. Welcome to our yard anyway, not-unicorn squirrel. And enjoy these last summer days.
