06/24/2022 – Opinions

While we had workers here earlier in the week, this floofy girl hid under the blankets like Quint does, making her own fort for the day. After the workers left, this ginger girl had all kinds of opinions about the noise. More so than when she gets her hair cut for the summer, an event that usually happens around this time of year, and something she complains about at the top of her lungs during Mom’s attempt to not do too badly of a job.

Lucky for Pia, the workers won’t be returning for a month or so, and it’s been so cool and wet, no artistic statement will be attempted with clippers, Pia, and her fur for at least another few days. Also lucky for her, Mom can’t get to the cabinet where the clippers are kept because half our lives are crammed in the Cat Den where all cat things usually reside, and that cabinet is buried behind all that stuff. You do know cats have a lot of stuff, right?

On the other side and in his usual daytime fort, workers visiting or no, Quint’s only opinion was the occasional small mew of displeasure to our reassurances that all would be over soon.

Later, Olivia didn’t offer a peep on the ruckus. She didn’t have to. Her non-amusement glare was very clear.

Downstairs, and during the workers’ visit and noise, Viola lounged on a fleecy blanket, seemingly without a care or worry in the world. Viola has always been a very brave girl, as her mama raised her to be. When asked for an opinion on the thumping and pounding upstairs, she slow blinked her eyes and sighed. We took that as a no comment.

And in the kitchen, Tessa made it all too easy to gauge her opinion. It’s pretty much the same for everything.

We have a floor now in that once flooded spare room, but we’re not moving things back in just yet. Mom remembered way too late that she should have painted in there long before the floor was put in. Working overtime almost every week didn’t help, time-wise, but the extra $63.24 per paycheck is nice for the savings account! This is a big room with a vaulted ceiling and now, with the new laminate, Mom will have to be extra careful to use lots of plastic sheeting when she has a moment to breathe and get out the brush and rollers (Mom hates plastic sheeting).

When we decided to not replace the soaked and ruined twenty-three year old teal carpet (Teal! What were we thinking??) and go with laminate flooring like the rest of our house has, we knew we’d never match the existing color. That color was discontinued back in 2003. We were okay with this but knew we didn’t want a stark contrast by going with an obvious darker color. We’re light floor color people and were pleased to find something somewhat similar and with texture, and discovering it was being discontinued, with limited supply left, and at a good price sweetened the deal. Needless to say, we’re terribly happy with it. Finally, a first step in getting back to whatever goes for normal nowadays!

06/20/2022 – What? Monday Again?

Someone mentioned to Mom at work the other day that raccoons can’t be affectionate. And, of course, when Mom said otherwise and showed them this photo, that person refused to look or listen.

Okay, it’s “possible” Shaggy wasn’t licking or grooming her baby on its forehead here; who knows, maybe she was tasting it. Something tells us that wasn’t the case. And just look at the love in that baby’s eyes for its mama! At least, we’re choosing to believe that’s love every bit as we felt angel mama Zuzu was grooming, not tasting one of her Niblet babies in this flashback photo from October 2013.

Anyway, here’s to seeing love on Monday. Maybe on Tuesday, too, especially if we get our spare bedroom flooring installed, and the over-stuffed Cat Den a.k.a. On Site Storage back to the cats as nature intended.

One guess as to what Olivia thinks of that happening as planned and hoped.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

If our flooring is installed as planned on Tuesday, we’ll take Wednesday off to do nothing more than to sit around all day and admire it. No, not really. Undoubtedly, Mom will be moving furniture back in there with the hope of getting a wee bit of normalcy back into our lives and the cats’ lives. Of course, if anything changes or the floor install is cancelled (yet again), you’ll probably hear about it here Wednesday after all. Lucky you.

06/17/2022 – Finally Friday

For some reason, we have California poppies growing in the yard this year. They aren’t in a good location, and they don’t take transplanting well, so we’re leaving them for another two weeks. Undoubtedly, they will seed and we’ll have poppies everywhere but small ones handle transplanting better and Mom says she’ll move those when/if they come up.

We’re setting records nearly every month so far this year for the amount of rain and cool weather we’ve had. It snowed here in April. Our drought, heat, and record setting 116 degree day last summer was awful. Our thoughts go out to those going through ridiculous heat in other parts of the country, not to mention tornados and drought.

Someone else living in the neighborhood had their own bout with water damage, in this case, through their roof. We replaced our roof in 2020 and are happy with it. Still, after this year’s record rainfall, this scene gave us the heebie-jeebies.

Bad location nest © Colehauscats.com

Here’s a bad idea. This “nest,” which we’re certain has been abandoned, was located not quite five feet above a concrete patio along the very path neighborhood cats take to get from one side of our backyard to the other. From the back rest of chairs that sit directly below, raccoons could have easily reached this nest as well. It’s all about location, location, location, and this location was not a good one.

At Colehaus, a contractor contacted us and we’re happy to say a small piece of many parts yet to be tackled is being worked on now toward getting our primary bathroom shower back. We’re still hoping the whole job will be finished before the end of the year, and we’re not kidding. Contractors in our area are booked through mid-October now and thanks to an insurance snafu, we don’t have anyone on board yet.

But, that soggy carpet bedroom that was partially flooded after Shower leak #1 will have new flooring installed next week. Mom hopes to come home from work that day very angry so she’ll have all the energy in the world to move everything back into that room within some ridiculously short amount of time, and the cats can have their Cat Den back. And we’ll hope this computer recovers from having months of dust from the cat litter boxes located right next to this desk settle on and in it. Really, you should see the mess some nameless kitty makes in the closest box.

That cat wonders when she’ll get that room back, though we know for absolute certain, she has enjoyed every minute she’s been allowed up on the kitchen counter where, for lack of a better spot at the time, her feeder is located. Will she forevermore be fed on that counter? Will she rebel if we say no? Will we rebel if she says no to our no? Time will tell. Regardless, we think we’re stuck with having a litter box permanently located downstairs. We’re going to have to get creative making that work.

And then, during a brief half-day of dry sunshine, Tippy came to visit. Despite Mom tells him over and over how both she and Dad have gained Lloyd’s trust and he even enjoys brushies and chicken catnip treats, Tippy held his aloofness. Oh, Tippy.
