10/17/2022 – Every Monday a Monday Comes Around

Or so questions Quint on why that is. Humans titling days baffles him and Mom thinks maybe he’s on to something with that. Mom’s work week starts at o’dark-thirty Sunday mornings, unless she works overtime the days before. Monday is day two of her work week and not the Monday everyone else seems to dread (that would be on Sunday when half her coworkers don’t show up, yet again).

So Monday doesn’t hold the same weight, usually. But sometimes it does. Last Monday, we thought we’d be wrapping up our bathroom restoration. Mom was so excited all day but there was a delay. A wayward part, crucial to completion, roamed the highways and byways of the Midwest for ten days or so, before finally making its way to its new home. A contractor picked it up Saturday and hoped to install it today. Again, Mom was excited . . . for about an hour.

Dad has other plans, that being to take care of his health by getting a flu shot and another covid booster, and a few other things. And because Mom’s at work most of this week and the contractor has another job that actually has all its parts available, that wayward part of ours might as well take a tour of our fine town from the comfort of the bed of the contractor’s pickup truck for another few days. Completion plans are scrapped until later in the month.

C’mon now, you didn’t really think we’d have a working bathroom this year, did you? Oh, and Pia? You don’t have to hide behind the curtains this week.

Editor’s Note: As of 5:oo PM last night (Sunday 10/16) we are under a Level 1 Fire Evacuation Alert due to nearby wildfire. We have cat carriers and supplies ready just in case. Our cats and our lives are more important than this house full of stuff we may need to leave behind/or lose. We don’t think we’re in danger but you just never know. More info as things develop, or not develop.

10/14/2022 – Friday Flashback with Olivia

Baby Olivia, 2012 © Colehauscats.com

Baby Olivia came to us from Foster Mom D and our local West Columbia Gorge Humane Society in August of 2012. She was shopping for a home alongside several brothers and one orange and white boy you may know as Quint. Though not related, Olivia and Quint are best friends to the point that they might as well be brother and sister.

Olivia was a very shy kitten and seemed to not know where her place was in our family. Quint helped her along and before long, she began to show her sweet, and mischievous side.

Long time Colehaus Cats readers know no fruit is safe left sitting around on kitchen countertops when Olivia is around, and using her sleek, black fur, Olivia often hides in the shadows, spying on family members, and reporting infractions to whomever will listen.

10/12/2022 – Worker Wednesday

We had a little bathroom work slowdown last week when some ordered parts took a grand tour of the northeastern part of the U.S. before heading over here to the west coast. Just a little tip: If a major big box home improvement store claims they have an item ” In Stock,” this does not mean they have it there, at that particular store, in stock. It could be “In Stock” in Antarctica for all you know. And very likely is!

Anyway, we hope work gets back on track sometime this week and really hope our bathroom restoration/rebuild will be wrapped up by the end of the month. Or by the end of the year. Who really knows?

Then, it’ll be time to try out the shower and make sure it doesn’t leak through the floor and through the living room ceiling directly below, followed by the whole process of getting a another bid for having that living room ceiling repaired with more cost, should all stay dry.

Even though it seems as though this entire year has been centered around this stressful bathroom shower fiasco, there’s been good things happening. First off, the long delay in finding a contractor (#19 finally came through) allowed us to keep adding to our small savings account toward paying for this whole thing. Time has allowed us to think through what we dreamed of versus how to restore the bathroom as cheaply as possible versus how to shop around, spend more wisely, and still up the value of our home a bit.

Secondly, Mom was in the middle of repainting the entire house when this damage happened (not to mention being laid off and finding a new, albeit lower paying job). And after months of self doubt, wondering if any of that was even worth the effort, she got back into it and is happy to report just two and a quarter rooms remain to be painted. You can do it, Mom!

Lastly, this was the perfect opportunity to go through closets and cabinets to sort through what would be better suited for donation and trash. We always keep a clean house, but boy, oh boy, were our closets stuffed! It’s high time other households enjoy stuff we pointlessly held onto for far too long. The nineties called. They want their purple and hunter green décor back!

Someday, when all is fixed and furniture is moved back and flip top boxes are emptied of stuff to donate and closets have an ounce of breathing room in them, we might feel like we live in a new house! Wouldn’t that be awesome!
