11/01/2023 – Wordy Wednesday

Weary Pia sleeps in late today. We had a lot of treat-n-treaters knock on our door last night, despite all the lights being off and an overall look of no one being home. So many neighbors had decorations and lights and signs and Halloween-type sounds, you’d think everyone would gravitate to those houses. Maybe it’s a new trend to go to the one house that’s dark and therefore, “spooky” and maybe it should also include “disappointment.” Sorry kids, no candy here.

Years ago, Mom learned a work day following Halloween is a perfect time to take a vacation day, especially if one has a few hours of vacation time to take. Coworkers are usually crankier than usual the day after Halloween, having stayed up too late taking their trick-n-treaters out and about, not to mention that sugar high followed by the enviable sugar low that, sometimes, goes on and on for days.

Mom saved her vacation day for just this day and she’s taking it in order to get a jump on painting the living room ceiling this weekend, the final last step of that big 2022 shower leak incident. If you recall, the ceiling drywall repair was completed a few months ago and Mom’s been fixing rough spots here and there. Our wallet can finally afford paint and it’s time.

This photo shows the unevenness of the drywall that Mom’s been working on and soon, it should look smooth and perfect. She’s already painted primer and sealer (Kilz) and as you might expect, can hardly stand waiting for it to be complete and that whole damage chapter to be over. She promises to take her time, to paint it in phases so her arm won’t feel like it’s falling off, and Quint promises to stay off the ladder, mostly.

10/30/2023 – Preparations

We used to be Halloween people. A couple of puzzling bad experiences changed our minds about participating years ago, mostly. And who can afford candy nowadays? Regardless, Mom’s been known, well, secretly known, on clear, dry Halloweens, to dress up in complete anonymity and wander the street amongst those sugar-craving hordes because . . . okay, who can figure out Mom?

So, despite having a darkened house and no doorbell, revilers knock, knock, knock away every year. And sometimes, steal our doormat, which means this year, in front of our house, there will be no doormat to wipe one’s costume-y clown shoes or lawn chairs upon which to rest weary souls. The lone big, heavy pot of perennials will need to fend for itself. We have faith in that it won’t get far.

However, should zombies break in, or any number of countless superhero toddlers and teens, Viola has inspected and prepared her trebuchet to fend off all. We have faith in her, too. And that trebuchet has yet to let us down.

Have a fun and safe Halloween!

10/27/2023 – For the Love of Cheese

Asking Tessa hard questions © Colehauscats.com

When Dad told Mom he had a sit-down talk with Tessa and asked her some hard questions, Mom may not have been paying close attention, and for good reason. Really, does this cat ever listen to anything said to her? Tessa’s always done whatever she wants, whenever she wants (within reason), and to whomever she wants. That’s just the trouble-seeking Tessa we’ve come to know and love.

Dad asked how she was doing lately. Tessa had no response.

Dad asked why she was intent to leap onto countertops and in particular, the off-limits buffet (boo-fay) when she knew she’d get yelled at for it. Again, Tessa had no response.

Dad asked why she intentionally smacked her brother Quint the other day, nearly scratching his eye, and she just stared at Dad like he was speaking dog.

Then, Dad told her he was disappointed in her for doing that.

That got a response.

Then again, it could have been the cheese snack he had in his hand, for she then reached out a soft paw toward him and pawed the air. Or maybe she was just trying to snag the cheese. You be the judge.
