“I see you’re up and as bright and sunshiny as the sun, that’s been up for hours,” Viola said offhandedly to Dad. “If it’s not too much trouble, there’s a cat outside. It’s talking to itself. It’s giving me the furry eyeball when I look at it.”
Dad mumbled something and looked out the back door. “It’s called the hairy eyeball, but I can understand how that’d be a furry eyeball to you.”

“Hmm,” Dad said.

“Welp! And now it’s giving me the furry eyeball!” Dad said. “It’s just sitting there. I don’t see it talking. Viola, how do you know it’s talking to itself? Some secret cat language trick only you and it knows?”

Dad, how long have we been together? And you’re just now saying you don’t know the secret cat language trick? Oh Dad, think about it. Imagine you’re outside. You’re not starving but there’s no food in the outside food bowl. Then you hear the sweet sound of birds chirping. You know you shouldn’t play with birds; that lady will see you from inside and yell, but you might need a little snack. Nearby, the outside water fountain is making splashy sounds. Is it the water beckoning or is it the birds merrily chirping away and unaware you’re close by. That’s called a quandary and it would baffle me if you weren’t talking yourself into one decision or another.
And that’s when Dad knew he needed coffee, not because it was early and he thought Viola was talking to him but because she was making so much sense.
