Somewhere between relaxing and twilight sleep, a thought or two came to me: What am I doing with my life? I mean, for today. What am I doing today, not what am I doing next month or even next year. Am I going to go out into the world and be something? Like a great storyteller, or a bigwig corporate CEO, oh, or maybe a fireman, er, a firecat? Or am I going to be what I’m best at, that being a cat.
So, because I was kind of sleepy and wasn’t planning on taking this thought too seriously, I asked myself, “Self, if you could be anything you wanted to be right now, would you be something other than a cat?”
And myself replied, “What? Be anything other than a cat? Why be anything other than a cat? You’re loved, your belly is full of tasty food, you have a nice blanket and it’s quiet. Weren’t you just moments from falling softly into a great afternoon sleep? Boy, you do come up with some doozies to think about. Relax now. Be a cat.”
Well, self, since you put it that way, I’ll be the best cat I can be, that being the best cat who builds the best sleep forts. Nighty-night!

What in the world is better than being a cat? Our humans always seem to get their whiskers in a twist about what they are and what they’re doing and how they compare with other humans. We felines understanding that being a cat is a noble calling and we nail it!
