Today I’m working with mom to teach her how to capture my best photo. She isn’t very good at it but she gets credit for trying. And trying. And trying some more. Always clicking in my face. Is it any wonder I don’t like the camera?

So, today, we’re learning about light and shadow. She doesn’t know that for buff-colored cats, light and shadow are EVERYTHING!

And this light isn’t it.

Ditto for this light. It’s too….. too…. too flat or two dimensional or something. My definition looks all wonky. Try again, mom.

WHOA! Back off the extra exposure, mom! Yer blindin’ me! Geez, if you’re going to go that far off the chart, you might as well color me purple!

Ha. Ha. Very funny.

Now, here you go! I like this one! Good natural light with a bit of backlight. That skylight up above with a touch of Ceiling Cat light shining down doesn’t hurt either. Good light is hard to come by. Good natural light is even harder to find but the results are worth it and so pretty. Thanks, mom, for not giving up!

that last photo is perfect Miss Newton,xx Speedy

  4. Don’t you want to teleport here and teach our mom too ? She has to learn to play with the light and especially to make clear, not trembling photos ! Purrs

  5. Well done for telling your Mom exactly how you want your photograph to look Miss Newton and let’s hope she remembers for next time.
Luv Hannah and Lucy xx xx

  6. Fuzzy Tales says:

Your mom did a fantastic job. Ours is hopeless with a camera, any camera…so any snapshot where we’re even just semi-clear is a keeper for her. And forget indoor shots — we face north and have very little natural light on the main level.

  7. Kitties Blue says:

Newton you are a very patient kitty. You are stunning in the final photo, especially your eyes. And we <3 how well your whiskers and eyebrows show up. Good job APAWS to your mom. Have a super terrific weekend. Purrs and paw-pats, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

  8. Miss Newton you look charming whatever the lighting we say and we think mum does a pawsome job photographing you all.

  11. Bernadette says:

It’s lovely, and what makes it perfect is the color in her eyes and, yes, the backlight illuminating her ear. We feline models are totally underrated and under-treated!

  12. Well done got there finally 🙂 x

  16. Newton, we think all those pictures of you are good. Our mom has a hard time with lighting too…we don’t always sit where the lighting is best. But you look beautiful!

Now see, I wish MY Human had the devotion and commitment to making *my* photos look that good. Pfft. She says good pictures of black kitties are impossible but *I* say she’s too lazy to learn.

  21. LP says:

We admire your patience Newton! The first and last photos are especially attractive but any photo of you is good! 🙂

the critters in the cottage xo

P.S. Our Mama’s best photos are when the lighting is just right too…it is amazing how it changes the look of us when the lighting is poor!
