Quint – A Budding Artist?

After months of trying to dissuade him, we’ve given up and accepted we’ve got a budding artist in the family.

It’s Quint, the littlest man of the house. It began when he discovered specks of fresh toothpaste on a bathroom mirror. Those specks were fascinating. He didn’t pounce and try to capture the specks; choosing instead to smear them around the glass. With his oversized paws and close proximity to the sink facet, soon we found it necessary to wipe down his “canvas” every day just so we could see ourselves.

My whapping face.

Fast forward a month and he graduated to a messier medium – damp cat litter on the Colehaus Cat Den closet doors. More spreading action and as an added touch, gentle paw print dabs placed here and there. Not that we didn’t appreciate his work but…there’s that “Ewwwww!” factor every morning.

This is my painting face.

We switched the litter box location and all seemed well. Quint’s “painting” continued, mostly without white clay streaks on wood and never with claws. “Thump, thump, thump, paw, paw, paw.” We can hear him even now as we type this, pawing gently at an open door.

But over the weekend, we came up with an idea. It’s in the testing phase right now but look for his results very, very soon!

Meet the Visitors – Geoffrey’s Still Here.

Geoffrey, the Outsider.

Geoffrey’s Still Here. 2012 © Colehaus Cats.

In which we interview neighborhood aloof stray Geoffrey who wants everyone to know that he’s still hanging around Colehaus most days and doesn’t plan to go anywhere far anytime soon.

How are you doing, Geoffrey? How’s life?

Geoffrey: I like it here. I like the nearby shrubs in the summer and my heated box in the winter. I don’t even mind sharing the space with the occasional opposum. The food my people put out for me is top-notch. In fact, I’ve got a whole committee who sees that I’m fed twice a day.

Remember when we experimented with bringing you inside once last winter? We were concerned about the extra cold weather. We thought you seemed open to moving in.

Geoffrey: Really? Sorry if you got that impression, but nope. Don’t wanna live inside. No offense but I don’t like the smells and I don’t like those other furballs. So, just no. No, no and for all you who are slow, N-O spells no.

So, no complaints? Anything we can do for you before the really cold weather arrives?

Geoffrey: Can’t think of anything offhand. But if anything comes up, I know where to find you. And visa-versa. Oh hey, how about a little brushing and a squirt of that flea stuff before you take off?

You got it, Geoffrey. Keep well, big boy. See you before dusk.

[Editor’s note: Brushed daily – check, checked fur and paws for good measure – check, flea treatment – check, refill food and water – check and check.]

No More Computer Playing for You.

Mom: All right. Who scratched up my laptop? C’mon, ‘fess up, you cats. Don’t make me go all CSI on the lot of you to figure it out. Who did it?

Pia: Mom, dearest, gentle, non-judgmental Mom, it is I, Pia, your sweetest, little orange girl whom you sought out to fill the ginger-shaped void in your broken heart, who cannot lie and must confess that this dasteredly deed, this infringement of your property and vandalism in the worst way, I’m compelled, no, I’m driven to admit, it was my big sister, Miss Newton.

Wasn't Me, Newton Says.

Miss Newton: What?!? Wasn’t me, I swear! Leave me out of this.

Mom: Pia, are you telling fibs?

Pia: No…well, no, um, technically maybe not, uh…

Who Me?

Tessa: Mom, look, it was me. I’m sorry. I was gonna say something about the scratches but in all the excitement of Pia’s storytelling, it slipped my mind. I swear, it was unintentional. I was stretching and stretching and somehow, your laptop just got in the way and well, there it is. Won’t happen again. I bet we’ll all feel better after a good nap.

Pia: Oh, I agree!

Mom: Okay, no more computer time for you. You either, Pia. Now go make up with your sister Newton. You owe her.
