05/19/2023 – Opportunities

If living with lots of cats and needing to do home repairs have taught us anything, it’s to find opportunities for improvement everywhere you can.

Due to a certain bathroom repair we faced last year, the cats had to give up their cat den for several months and that meant their cat feeders had to go elsewhere temporarily. We had the space for four, but not for five in another room. Technically, we had space for only three but two kitties decided to put aside their differences and things worked out well. Those two kitties were NOT Tessa and Viola. Applause to you, Pia and Quint.

We squeezed Tessa’s bowl in with the others but Viola’s ended up downstairs on the kitchen counter of all places. Viola already spend most of her time downstairs, even overnight, keeping watch on all things that happen overnight in the most boring overnight house ever where nothing happens.

A few months went by and the cats got their cat den back and somehow, we decided Viola’s feeder was “okay” to keep up on the kitchen counter. What were we thinking?? Mom was determined to find a good opportunity to move Viola and her feeder back up in the cat den and off the kitchen counter where no cat food feeder should ever reside.

Two weeks ago, the drywallers set up a couple of noisy fans downstairs to dry the drywall mud and it took a day and a half before Dad noticed Viola wasn’t eating. Her feeder on the kitchen counter was about six feet away from those noisy fans, and though Viola is a very, very brave girl. the noise and blowing air were too much to handle.

Spotting the opportunity, Mom jumped all over that and brought Viola’s feeder back upstairs to the cat den. It took Viola less than three minutes to find it and dig into eating.

Now, if we could just convince Tessa to stop guarding Viola’s feeder, all would be swell. Just swell.

05/15/2023 – Monday’s Meow Muffin

Meow Muffin?? Did you just call me Meow Muffin? I think you’d better inspect your morning muffin to see if there’s anything strange in it.

Oh, Tessa, we think you should just go with the flow today and accept whatever term of endearment we might bestow upon you. Would that be so horrible, for once?

Just moments earlier, Tessa was sitting on a window sill and get this: She was making soft mewing sounds at someone or something outside. When did this happen, we asked ourselves. When did Danger Cat Tessa start talking to outsiders?

We crept to the window to see what or who Tessa was talking to. Was it a bird? She often softly chatters with birds, trying to convince them to come inside just for a moment. Understandably, the birds ALWAYS decline her invitation. Was it a cat visitor? Sorry, Tessa, outside cats cannot come inside for a visit, either.

Nope, no bird or cat. It’s Shaggy, the raccoon, coming to check for food in the feeding stations. Hey! Since when does Tessa meow at the visiting raccoons? No, Tessa. Absolutely not. That raccoon is NOT coming inside for a visit. Not now, not ever!

Hmm, is this a new rule I’m supposed to be aware of? I’m kind of running out of options for having a friend come over to visit, Mom.

Tessa, you live in a house full of cats. Why don’t you try to make a friend out of one? Maybe one you share a lot of similarities with?
