06/09/2023 – Just Checking

Last month, Pia had her vet checkup, during which the vet was unable to get a urine sample to make the call on any kidney disease progression. We don’t want to assume she has kidney disease but having had so many ginger girls (all the way back to 1976!), we’ve learned they are very susceptible. We will be saddened but not surprised.

This makes today Pee Day, and we can only hope this proper lady, who always goes before she goes, saved a tiny bit for the vet.

06/07/2023 – At Last!

This is Murray. She’s a late afternoon backyard visitor to Colehaus and Mom’s been trying to make friends with her for five long months, maybe longer but we’re not getting wrapped up in the details here.

Murray lives in the next block over, on a mostly safe and quiet street that’s used to seeing raccoons and cats crossing at all times of day and night.

After a particularly trying day at work, Mom took two minutes to sit outside on the cement steps to look at Murray laying at the end of the walkway. Mom may have had her trusty crinkly bag of dried Chicken Catnip treats with her, like you do. She closed her eyes for a moment, and when she opened them:

Murray had crept close. Mom held her breath and didn’t move.

Of course, when one gives you the squinty eyes of love and approval, one squints their eyes right back. Slowly, Mom set a finger-full of treats onto the step next to her and . . .

Murray went for the treats and rubbed her chin on the catnip. She sniffed Mom’s finger and accepted Mom’s bold, single top-of-the-head petting. Silently to herself, Mom squealed, “YES! Success!”

The very next evening, Mom and Murray ran through a rinse and repeat scenario with the exception of a full body petting accepted instead of a single head petting. Mom’s convinced Murray is a girl and reports that Murray feels very good and solid, though she could stand a brushing due to what Mom thinks may be a slight undercoat pile up (no mats yet found).

After a greet and eat, Murray returned to the backyard where she lounged on a patio chair to watch birds until nearly dusk when she slipped back down over the back boulder wall toward home.

It’s special moments like this that makes all this worthwhile, don’t you think?

06/05/2023 – Other Things

Mom says I’m always glaring at something or mostly, at someone. I do not, and if she were here 24-7, she’d see that I do a lot of other things. I present evidence.

Here I’m relaxing in my box. Okay, truthfully, I “may” have been partially glaring at someone who thinks this is her box, but the point is, I was RELAXING while glaring. It’s not quite the same as just glaring, is it?

In this case, I was mindlessly sharpening my nails on the rug Mom says is indestructible, therefore, is okay to scratch, unlike that cabinet she went on and on about me “inspecting” last month. Here, Mom was telling me I was a good girl because I was scratching something deemed “okay.” I KNOW I’M A GOOD GIRL! Geesh! She only tells me a million times a day what I already know (I may have thought glaringly)!

Surely, I’m not glaring here . . . just wondering what kind of sick individual leaves the food cabinet partially open just a tic, inviting anyone to partake in our kibble snacks, and causing an OCD cat like myself to glar . . . ah, to look at it really hard. MOM! Come in here and fix this before some cat starts “inspecting” this cabinet, too!

At last, I promise I’m not glaring here. Well, maybe to the inside of my eye lids. Really, I wouldn’t glare at so much if there wasn’t so much to glare at. I have reasons, you know. Good, valid reasons. I’m taking a nap right at the moment, but I promise, someday we’ll go through my list of all the reasons to glare around here. It’s a good list, you’ll see!
