12/13/2023 – e-Card Bloopers

We had a hard time getting anyone to volunteer for this year’s Christmas e-card. A very hard time. We didn’t want to disturb Olivia who was napping, Viola looked mortified and gently reminded us she was last year’s “volunteer,” and Tessa, well, Tessa’s never quite forgiven us for using her during our 2020 Christmas card bonanza in which she seemed the perfect spokescat for so many of those pressing holiday questions.

What if I don't want to go Dashing through the Snow?

This year’s “volunteers” just did not want to get into the holiday spirit, not initially. We didn’t use catnip or treats to get them to pose because honestly, have you ever seen a cat “pose” when high on catnip? Maybe they do, but something tells us that kind of posing around here wouldn’t be appropriate for a public Christmas card.

We ended up choosing Quint and Pia. Both had been napping previously . . . which might explain the first couple of photos. We can still hear them now:

You woke us up for THIS??

Lovely. All finally turned out well as you can see up over there –> on the top of the right hand side bar (click each to see a bigger version). Probably no hard feelings either, most likely. Not like Tessa who has the memory of an elephant and holds a grunge like a grunge-holding tuxie cat. And since that’s the case, let’s revisit a couple more of Tessa’s other e-card masterpieces.

What if I really do get 7 swans a-swimming?
What if Santa really does know who's Naughty and Nice?

It’s very bright in here today, Mom. Is winter over already?

No, Pia. Winter isn’t even here yet. It’s still fall, kind of a pre-winter tasting. Soon enough, the rain and cold weather will be back.

So, it’s not even winter yet? Does that mean I still have time to soak up sun puddles?

Yep. If you can find one, it’s all yours.

Ahh, all mine.

12/08/2023 – Quiet

It’s been quiet here this week, and understandably so with the loss of Olivia one week ago. We’re watching the permanent residents – Tessa, Pia, Quint, and Viola while trying not to be obvious about it. Mom talked at length with one of our favorite vets about what to look for, what methods of distraction can be used – snuggling, playtime, etc. should anyone begin searching, calling, and obsessing over the loss. This is the behavior long time Angel Cameron displayed after we lost Zooot in 2012. After a few weeks of nearly nonstop pacing, searching, calling, and crying for the love of his life, we lost him to a broken heart. We absolutely are not going to allow anyone to go through that.

So, Viola hung around Mom a little more than usual the first couple of days, as did Quint, then as our work schedules shifted, they spent days with Dad.

Pia chose to spend her time curled up in a cubby compartment in the tower. We plugged in the heated mat and she’s happy. No complaints from her, though the first day of Olivia’s absence, Pia pooped on the floor well away from any litter box (photo available upon demand). We’re not taking that personal. That was probably just a boo-boo.

The only one who seemed to look around for Olivia was Tessa, oddly enough since they didn’t get along terribly well and stayed out of each other’s sight most of the time. It’s hard to put a finger on exactly what behavior Tessa was showing, it was more of a feel than anything else. Tessa seemed more alert, didn’t nap as much as she used to, and showed interest in things and places she couldn’t have cared less about two weeks ago.

That said, she did knock over a small lamp on the boo-fay yesterday. So, we’re looking at it as she’s her typical Tessa self again. As for us, we think we’re healing and we can’t begin to thank you enough for all your kindness and comforting words.
