Well, that was a L-O-N-G work week. Nine days in a row with a single 1/2 day off in between. It wasn’t so much that Mom felt she was at work more than at home (technically, she’s always at work more than at home on any work day due to the 12-hour work days) but that when Mom arrived home and did her usual headcount, Tessa hid in the re-located crinkle paper box and looked at her like, “Who are you?”
Hey kid, just trying to keep you in the matter of which you’ve grown accustomed.
Later still and after pulling herself away from all the crinkly paper goodness, Tessa forgave Mom for her absence and invited her to join in on one of the usual Tessa daily activities.

Gee, Mom, you being gone for so long, you must be parched! Here, have some water. It’s pretty good. Lemme get you some. * Puts paw under thin water stream *

When my paw gets wet, then you slurp the water off like this. Got it? Okay, you try. I’ll get you some.

I’ll make it extra sloppy wet for you, Mom. Anytime you think I’ve got enough water for you, lemme know!
Tessa, you’re a sweetheart but I, um, well, I had a big glass of water just before coming home. But thanks. Another time, perhaps?

Hmm, why is it I’m getting the sense you’re being less than honest with me?
Well, slurping water off your furry paw wasn’t exactly on my to-do list today, nor as part of my dinner menu. No offense. I’m sure I’ve ingested enough of your fur over the years to make a whole ‘nother cat. Just not feeling it today. Does that make you feel better?

Make me feel better? That was brutally honest, Mom. I’ll give you that. And here, I thought we had something good going together. You being gone, coming home at long last begging for my attentions, me offering you choice water slurpings off my favorite paw. And you beg off instead. Wow, Mom. I’m supposed to feel better?
Tessa, I didn’t force you to be a part of our annual Christmas eCard photo session, it’s six days before Christmas and I just got home from a long work week. Let’s not have this conversation right now.
To be continued. Maybe.

You’re such a thoughtful girl, Tessa!
Humans just don’t understand cats, amIright Tessa?
Sorry your mom has had to work so much lately. I am glad you forgave her. XO
It was very kind of you to offer your mom water off your delicate paw. She has worked very long hours, so maybe let her have a rest, or maybe you should tell her she needs to take a rest. She might join you in a drink then, but maybe not water for her.
My friend Ms. SH, who is no longer with us, ran a cattery. She had a tea towel on display which said, “Cat hair is a condiment and a fashion statement.”
That was so kind of you to offer Mom Cole some water from your paw, Tessa. We’re sorry she has had to work so much. Maybe she will be more accepting of your kind offer after she’s had a rest. XO
