01/18/2017 – Happy 5th Blogoversary, Us!

Five years! Who knew we’d still be here five years after Dad offhandedly suggested Mom post photos of our cats somewhere as a way to honor those who had passed and because the Internet didn’t have enough cat photos?

Mom published the first Colehaus Cats post on January 19th 2012* using a free WordPress theme over the use of several other frustrating blogging software options. Seeing angel Maxx’s photo finally posted out to the world convinced her Dad’s comment was the best idea ever.

The first blog post was titled “Meet the Colehaus Cats – Maxx, the Innocent.” That was an inside joke because Maxx was known more for being Maxx, the Troublesome Nipper Who Regularly Draws Blood and Who Doesn’t Understand the Physics of Possessing a Weighty Big Butt While Always Failing at Jumping Across Big Expanses of Empty Space and Therefore, Makes a Mess.

Thankfully, Mom shortened that post title.

Then, Mom tried to create a header. She cringes when she sees her original Colehaus Cats blog headers. Here’s a few of them from that first year in 2012.

Then, Mom got the bright idea that maybe one of the actual Colehaus Cats ought to be on the header, not some cute, but random cat photo stolen from the Internet. Yes, our Mom stole a photo once from the Internet without figuring out who created it. Ex-feral, angel Cameron was her first choice, followed by one featuring angel Zooot, and then angel Seth.

That last one was from when Mom was in her Peach phase. She was under the impression blog colors needed to change with the season, so the peach header was followed by a pale blue one, then soft pink, and finally, light green. You might remember those days. Eventually, she got over that.

All told, Mom posted three separate Meet the Colehaus Cats entries that first day introducing Maxx, Seth, Cameron, and Zooot. Later in the month, before Mom figured out a regular blog post schedule, she told an audience of one a little about each cat’s personality.

She almost quit our blog a time or two, most notably after Zooot passed quickly followed by Cameron in April and June 2012. A first commenter, Baby Patches from Nip and Bones helped Mom feel she wasn’t posting to a big, black void. Jan from Jan’s Funny Farm was the second commenter following Mom’s discovery of the wonderful world of The Cat Blogosphere who brought so many commenters to welcome baby Pia.

The rest, well, most of you know how the rest of the years have gone. We’ve had a blast, we’ve laughed and cried, and we’ve vowed to find ways to help pets in need, inspired by the work of many of you.

Most of all, we’ll always cherish the memories how other pet-loving people found us and encouraged us to keep going via their own blogs by posting great, timely information and tips, a spectacular photo or set of photos, and hundreds of warm, from-the-heart posts. We continued to feel encouraged during a long questionable time after Mom was publicly shamed by a longtime friend at a science fiction convention in May 2014 for running a cat blog. Thank you for your supportive and positive emails.

The Stats

We still post every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Some kitties have left us and more kitties have joined us. We care for and feed our development’s feral, stray, and abandoned kitties (and squirrels and raccoons, too). Since blogging, we’ve gone from four cats to six, then seven followed by eight and once for a few months, a high cat count of thirteen (with Zuzu and all Niblets). Some years we take in fosters, and we don’t mind admitting we’re suckers for adding fosters to our family. Who wouldn’t when presented with these faces?

For a while, we had a cat web cam and Mom sometimes misses it even though it wouldn’t stream live.

Dad took over posting for four summer months in 2015 when Mom was going out of town to writing conventions a lot. We love our cats and are very much in tune with each other and the needs and desires of each Colehaus Cat so we hoped no one noticed the difference in posting styles from Mom to Dad.

We’ve published 903 posts over the past five years and received 19,376 comments total in that time frame. The most viewed post (1,169 views) was just after the birth of The Niblets. Our About page is the most viewed page (1,252 views).

Mom’s personal stats show the shortest amount of time she spent creating a blog post was four minutes. She might have been showing off. The longest time spent creating a post was seventy-three hours, give or take an hour. Obviously, this was not continuously working time otherwise, Mom would have gone bonkers. Wouldn’t have been the first time.

Since 2012, we’ve met five Cat Blogosphere bloggers in person and have heard from close to one hundred others. We’ve held four raffles and have won four raffles. That’s evened out nicely.

We hope we’ve been good bloggers over the years. We always welcome comments and suggestions, and we love hearing directly from you.

Thank you for finding us, for reading us, and for sometimes commenting. We’re big blog lurkers ourselves from time-to-time and we don’t mind lurkers here.

Thank you for visiting us. It might seem that we say that a lot but we mean it from our hearts every single time.

Thank you for helping us celebrate today and for celebrating all the Colehaus Cats!

*we know we’re one day short of the official Blogoversary day. We’re cutting ourselves a bit of slack here.

Where’d 2016 go? It was just here a day ago… Happy 2017! From everyone here at Colehaus Cats, we thank you for visiting us, for reading our words, enjoying our photos, and leaving comments. We hope what we’re doing works for you and that your visit here puts a smile on your face. Please join us today for our 2016 Year in Review!

January 2016 began with the first habitation of two Feralvilla feral shelters and a feeding station just in time for a rare snow day, with evidence of all our overnight visitors. The month evolved (devolved?) into picky cats and mad cats. There were claims of ownership, morning snuggles, and a certain Patrol Sergeant showing off her kitten cam video habit.

February rolled in with an infestation of counter seals from which Mom ran from the house to go meet an adorable blog friend in town for an important show. Quint, tired from all the winter rain, created late winter art, Pia sent Valentine kisses to her boyfriend Dexter, someone didn’t like being called the baby (and still doesn’t), and someone else nicknamed Ms. GrowlyPants temporarily moved in for some fostering.

Sweet Viola kisses ushered in March to help temper all the vet checkups and nasty ear infection medication foster Miss Itty required daily. Our friend Joan sent us a beautiful frame which quickly became the focal point of our living room and houses the first piece of Quint’s art we purchased and framed for ourselves. Spring finally arrived and with it, the first visit of the year with the visitors around Colehaus. We learned a number of things about Miss Itty, including her love of catnip, and making a friend in Zuzu with a shared dislike of all loud shenanigans. Must be a ginger girl thing.

April started with grumpy cats as is the norm around here on April Fool’s Day. A couple of Friday Flashbacks returned smiles to our faces. We posted about a mama’s right, excuses on a Monday, and finally, Quint took his first spring walk in his garden, after which, he created his top-selling art series ever, Full Spring.

Quint relished a second stroll in his blooming garden in May and we gave a nod to Squeakers, the highest ranking toy amongst all toys at Colehaus. We got silly with foster Miss Itty and Olivia found herself the highlight of two blog posts in a single week! There were MultiCat Mondays, furniture clearly made for one particular cat, and more visitors to Colehaus.

June brought dental checkups and some extractions so we dedicated the rest of the month to pure fun. There were toys, Three Word Wednesdays, more toys, and trust from foster Miss Itty.

July started with the bang of fireworks. We made a big, multi annex fort and spent the 4th of July playing with toys, listening to Mom read kitty books, hiding, and napping until the big booms were over. Foster Miss Itty showed everyone senior girls still know how to play, the typical teen Viola spent the month being bored, and we got a peek of what was to become our daily dinnertime entertainment. There was a Friday Flashback with Tessa, questions from Pia, and cat math according to Olivia.

Quint jumped into August by recreating his Summer Lilies with paint, we raised questions about the future for foster Miss Itty, and there were more yearly vet checkups to get through. Ginger Princess Pia sent her love to Ginger Prince D, and we took a summer stroll to see the visitors around Colehaus.

Ducks and good news heralded in September with a pinch of mischief on the side. Foster Miss Itty because Sunny, our last Colehaus Cat, and with the help of kind donators and fans of Quint’s Sunflowers art, she was able to afford her final medical procedures plus elimination of two pesky infections and support for her ongoing Stage 3 kidney disease. THANK YOU! We took another walk around Colehaus, Mom confused us with her cat fiction, and fruit-lovin’ Olivia was instrumental in the great grape escape.

October saw a Monday tribute to Colehaus Cat mamas, a dear happy three-year birthday letter to the Niblets (with links to all past Dear Niblet letters) – one of which grew up to become the Colehaus Circus Cat, and Quint jumps at the chance to paint once again. We showed piles of kitties snuggling together and gave an update on Sunny.

We jumped into November with what else? A Wordless Wednesday. But later and with what we hoped was better content, we shared MultiCat photos, a rare lint panther, a Friday Flashback with Pia and Bunny, some hellos and goodbyes on our final around Colehaus tour, Quint’s winter painting, and finally, some Friday fun.

And lastly, December rushed in with a month of holiday cheer and happy surprises, a nod to previous Colehaus Cats, a couple of snugglebugs and Christmas card bloopers, a word or two about the Nice List and the Naughty List, and our favorite true Christmas story. Given a health A-OK, Sunny moved into the luxury suite with Ruby and there came more cards and gifts and toys than anyone here had ever seen.

There you have it, 2016 revisited. What a wonderful, fun year it was here at Colehaus. We’re looking forward to what this new year will bring and wish for you all a fabulous 2017 filled with joy, happiness, and excitement, and most of all, peace and love.

Thank you for visiting. Thank you for reading us.

12/09/2016 – Friday Flashback

Did you know Quint’s artwork makes for great holiday gifts? Paintings made by a cat? Yep! They’re fun and thoughtful and especially well-suited for those pet lovers who think they have everything! Please click on Quint’s Art Shop icon over on the far right sidebar –> or visit his art shop directly by clicking here to take a look at his work. All proceeds for all paintings sold through January will go toward helping with senior sister Sunny’s recent vet bill. Happy looking and thank you!

Before the Colehaus Cats you know now, in the ancient, olden days of yore, before there were many cats on the Internets, there were two earlier batches of Colehaus Cats. Sadly, we don’t have much in the way of photos from the very first group, but we do have good records of the second.

Lounging in the original Cat Den before cabinets and cat trees, clockwise from lower left corner, Queen Crits in the round bed giving gray, ex-feral Cameron a bath. Big ginger boy Ian weighed in at forty-three pounds and defied nearly all attempts at dieting (he finally came down to twenty-five with ultra strict vet monitoring). Dilute tortie G.B. naps in the upper corner. Almost white Skitters adopted us when we helped him recover from being nailed shut in an attic by a bad neighbor. And ginger girl Zooot, outgoing sibling to sister G.B loved snuggling anywhere her favorite blanket lay.

All are at the Rainbow Bridge now, undoubtedly sticking together, sharing and remembering good times. You can read more about each one here at our Never Forgotten – OTRB link.
