02/09/2018 – A Day with Ruby

Ruby’s day begins whenever she wishes it to start, as all sweet kitties named Ruby have that right. Sometimes, she’ll stay sleeping on the soft blankets and comforter near Dad until his work alarm goes off at o’ dark-thirty and he turns on the lights. Then, she moves to his warm pillow after he gets up. Other times, she’s already snuggled under the covers against Mom whose internal heater is always on full blast.

Ruby stays there until she hears Dad coming back with her breakfast. Sometimes, she meows softly, insistently, telling Dad to hurry. Mom says that’s a much better sound than her alarm clock and way much better than hearing a cat barf. NOTHING gets Mom up faster than that sound.

After breakfast at her own SureFlap feeder, and a quick bath to get her furs perfect, it’s Tower Time. Sometimes, she sits in the window to watch the sun come up first, but not for long. Ruby LOVES her tower and what’s not to love? It’s tall, has two heated levels, and is set where she has complete view of the master bedroom her room. She’s had entire blog posts dedicated to her love of her tower. It’s where she prefers to spend over ninety percent of her day. It’s rare that Ruby ever leaves this room because…. why?

Ruby became a member of our family when she was ten years old after her owner could no longer keep her. What most people don’t know is that Ruby had lived alone in a small, windowless sewing room her entire life. We think that’s why she’s not a fan of large spaces. She likes the space to be the right size to keep her eyes on everything and everyone coming and going. The position of her tower in her room gives her the perfect view.

She isn’t a social cat, either. Maybe from being kept separate all those years? Maybe she was picked on because she’s small; only six pounds, and that’s why she lived in that tiny room by herself? We’ll never know.

During the day, Mom checks in on Ruby and takes note of how much she’s eaten. Sometimes, Mom reads to her or turns on music, either one Ruby can take or leave. She’d prefer Mom took a nap so she could snuggle under the covers again, but Mom’s not the napping kind.

The only time Ruby feels adventurous enough to leave her room is right before Dad brings her dinner. She’s taking a big chance then, because many of the other cats are lounging around in that general area. But she does it anyway. We think that’s to bring home the point that Dad needs to hurry up because somewhere in the world, cats are starving.

By the way, Ruby never eats all the food in her bowl – at breakfast or at dinner, and has food sitting there waiting to be eaten 24/7. We think it’s as much about the attention, ambiance, and dining partners as it is the expertly served pate in a gleaming stainless steel SureFlap bowl. And by dining partners, she means no one else. Must be more fallout from all those years spent eating alone.

Closer to bedtime for Mom and Dad, she acts lovey and gets talky because she knows brushies before bedtime are coming, not to mention the snuggling on blankets with Dad again. It’s been a good day. Mom hasn’t come in to nap, but she hasn’t come in to vacuum, either. Her sister Olivia hasn’t snuck in to chase and glare at her, and in just a little while, Dad will be home to serve dinner and brushies before bed. Tomorrow, we start all over again.

*yawn* Now we feel sleepy for some reason…

01/22/2018 – Miscellaneous Monday

Every once in a while, Mom ends up with a bunch of photos that don’t really belong in any group. Or maybe they do belong, together, in a Miscellaneous group. And… that’s the story we’re sticking with for today. Enjoy our Miscellaneous Monday!
