01/26/2018 – Oh, Bananas

Every once in a while, we get email questions. And we love those. Lately, we’ve been asked, “How big is ___x cat___? She/he looks so big next to ___x cat___.”

We generally use that opportunity to stop and think, “Hmmm, how long has it been since we weighed ___x cat___, anyway?” But here’s the thing: Does everyone know how big an eight pound cat looks? How about a fourteen pound cat? Or a six pound cat? What if that cat is mostly floof, or has long legs, or a ton of attitude or is photographed at a weird angle? Don’t those scenarios make a difference in size?

And then, we thought, “Lots of people know the size of a banana. Yeah, we could do a size comparison next to a banana.” We gave serious thought about using a slice of bacon but you know, thickness, uncured-ness, applewood-smoked versus alder-smoked, whether or not someone ate it during photography, etc.

“How about we use your average-sized banana (eight inch length) to show how big or small our ___x cats___ are?” we said to ourselves. And we just happened to have one. A banana, that is.

Sunny thought it was a good idea.

  1. Love those banana photos and a good way to get some perspective on size! Coincidentally my last post was about fat cats.

  2. Brian says:

We’re bananas for those banana photos!

  3. da tabbies o trout towne says:

guyz…yur page iz book marked N we iz reddy to go ~~~~~~ theeze fotoz R grate N this post gived uz de grinz !!! afturr everee one haz pozed with a nanner we say try a mackerull 🙂 ♥♥

  4. OMC – that is hilarious. 🙂 It does make a difference though – Ivy weighs just slightly more than Daiquiri but is very much shorter so she looks a little…ummm… wider.

  5. Bernadette says:

Great comparison, and way more fun for kitties than waving your hands and trying to get them to look at you!

  6. Obviously not a nip nanner! That human nanner is great for comparison.

  7. No way could I put a banana next to Manny or Chili Bruce…they’ll eat anything!
    Cute post!

  8. kittiesblue says:

Interesting concept. Was anyone fearful of the banana? Did anyone think it was a nip manner and try to bite it? The old basis for comparison was a bread box, but we guess no one owns one of those anymore. Wait…Mom says she thinks she has one in the basement. Of course she does. She never gets rid of anything. Absolutely no one was fearful of the banana. We think they are too used to Mom doing oddball things to be fearful of much of anything. As for trying to bite it, Quint did manhandle it a bit. Good thing it’s….. A FAKE BANANA! We confess it’s fake!

  9. Summer says:

I can see how tiny Viola is with the banana comparison!

Your human has met me, so she knows how big (or rather, not big) I am – but people rarely realize how dainty I am until they have met me.

  10. Marg says:

That is an interesting way to measure your cat. I am sure mine would be all different sizes. We will just have to get a banana. Have a great day.

  11. Madi and Mom says:

My mom might be part Monkey she is a ‘nanner fan too
    Hugs madi your bfff

  12. Well, you’re all bigger than a banana. But we think you all would prefer a nip nanner to that banana.

  13. It’s really hard to figure out relative size when all you can go by are pictures. I’ve been wrong more than right when trying to guess. This is a great idea!

  14. Wow, Viola is tiny! The banana is really serving its purpose.

  15. 15andmeowing says:

Good comparison, it is hard to tell how big a cat is online.

  16. Katie Isabella says:

I look like a substantial Ladycat..I do have long furs but too, I am substantial Ladycat. The GentlemanCats seem to admire me from all angles.

Viola is a dainty tiny little fairy bell kitty!

  17. I LOVE the use of that banana! I wonder how much bigger than an average-sized banana, Andy is. I wonder how much bigger than than an average-sized bunch of bananas, Andy is. And I wonder how much crazier he is, too. MOUSES!

  18. That is a fun way to measure them. Viola is so tiny and dainty.

  19. Cleo says:

Studies in cats with bananas. Awesome stills!

  20. meowmeowmans says:

Oh, we love this! What a fun way to show your kitties’ sizes! 🙂

  21. Noodle says:

    What no nip??!!
Well sometimes a banana is just a banana…

    Noodle and crew

  22. Now you’re always going to have the proper sized banana for photos. Maybe a nip banana would work.
